WHAT CAUSES…SCALY SHINS?

Dry skin can be unsightly and uncomfortable – particularly in the warmer months. How can you help?

Cosmetic dermatologist Dr Mervyn Patterson says, “Dry, scaly skin on the shins is incredibly common, especially as we age and our skin becomes thinner and drier. This area has fewer oil glands than the rest your skin, so it’s more prone to moisture loss. Long hot showers, harsh soaps and central heating can make it worse. The best fix? Swap to a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, avoid over-scrubbing and apply a rich moisturiser. Look for barrier-repair ingredients like ceramides, alongside hydrating ingredients such as urea and shea butter. For stubborn patches, try a cream with lactic or salicylic acid to gently exfoliate and hydrate. If it persists, check with your GP as it may be eczema.”
