WHAT CAUSES…PINS AND NEEDLES?
Do you frequently experience pins and needles? Here’s all you need to know to understand the cause…

The annoying tingling of pins and needles occurs when blood flow to nerves is restricted, often from sitting or sleeping on a limb, or wearing tight clothing or shoes. While the nerve is squeezed, so are the arteries that feed blood to the nerve. This cuts off the nerve’s supply of oxygen and glucose, interrupting its ability to send signals to the brain, and causing the area to ‘fall asleep’.
Once circulation is restored, nerve cells wake up and can become hyperactive, triggering the familiar prickling sensation. While usually harmless and short-lived, pins and needles can last longer in people with diabetes or Raynaud’s Syndrome. In rare cases, it may signal conditions like multiple sclerosis.
If pins and needles become persistent or recurring, consult your GP to rule out any underlying issues.
