WHAT CAUSES…FLUTTERING EYES?

Twitching eyes can be irritating – but are they something to worry about? Read on to find out more…

Eye twitching (known medically as blepharospasms) usually comes and goes on its own, without causing any issues. It occurs when the muscle in one (or both) of your eyelids spasms or blinks involuntarily. It can be triggered by lack of sleep, dehydration, stress, eye strain or irritation, or too much caffeine or alcohol. It might also be a side effect of medication. For most, an eye twitch is harmless and goes away on its own. However, a fluttering lid could be an indication of other eye conditions such as dry eye syndrome or conjunctivitis. Try using moisturising eye drops and wearing sunglasses. If the flutter persists, a hospital specialist can treat spasms with the anti-wrinkle jab Botox which was originally invented to prevent muscle contractions around the eyes.
