WHAT CAUSES…CRAMP?
Most of us have experienced the sudden, excruciating pain of a muscle cramp. So what is it and what can you do to help?

Cramp is common, usually harmless, and often affect the legs, particularly at night or during rest. Leg cramps occur when a muscle tightens, causing pain that lasts seconds to 10 minutes. Soreness can linger for up to 24 hours.
Causes of leg cramps:
- Ageing
- Muscle strain during exercise, especially in hot or humid conditions
- Pregnancy
- Certain medications, such as statins or diuretics
- Dehydration
- Liver disease from excessive alcohol consumption
- Sometimes, the cause is unknown
To ease a cramp, try stretching or massaging the muscle. Standing and placing weight on the affected leg may also help. Regular calf stretches may help reduce the frequency of cramps.
Contact your GP if cramps regularly disturb your sleep, last over 10 minutes, or occur with swelling or numbness. Treatment may include stretching exercises or quinine tablets.
