WHAT CAUSES… BLUSHING?

Brides are famous for it, but blushing – characterised by telltale facial redness and heat – can often be unwelcome

Blushing is a natural physiological response to emotions, most commonly embarrassment or anxiety, though it can also occur due to heat. This reaction happens when the adrenal glands release adrenaline, which dilates blood vessels. Since the blood vessels in our cheeks are wider and closer to the skin’s surface than in other areas the flushing is more pronounced, especially on paler skin.

Certain medical conditions can also lead to facial flushing, including menopausal hot flashes and rosacea, which leads to visible small blood vessels and spots on the skin. Additionally, some medications may cause blushing – it’s important to check the side effects of any medication you are taking for this issue.

Some people develop a fear of blushing, but cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) offers effective techniques for relief. Your GP can provide a referral to a specialist if needed.
