SIMPLE FOOD SWAP: PEPPERONI ON PIZZA
You don’t have to sacrifice flavour with these spicy mushrooms – perfect for a punch of flavour on your favourite pizzas

Dietician Emma Shafqat (dieticianwithadifference.co.uk) says that while spicy pepperoni can be a tasty pizza topping, processed meats like pepperoni are linked to cancer, are high in saturated fat and are obviously not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. For a nutritious and lower-calorie alternative that delivers a similar meaty, umami punch, try her spicy mushrooms, which are rich in fibre and B vitamins.
Start by thinly slicing firm chestnut mushrooms, then gently fry them in a dash of olive oil. Extra virgin is best as it is high in monounsaturated fatty acids which boost ‘good’ cholesterol levels, plus antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that may reduce plaque buildup in arteries. Add minced garlic and a spoonful of paprika to enhance the flavour. Once cooked, sprinkle your spiced mushrooms generously over a homemade or shop-bought pizza before popping in the oven. Simple, healthy and yummy!
