SIMPLE FOOD SWAP: HEALTHY CRISPY COATING

There is a smarter way to enjoy your favourite breaded food that keeps all the crisp but is a healthier alternative

That irresistibly crisp, golden crust on chicken or fish usually signals a less than healthy combination of white – or packet – breadcrumbs and plenty of fat. But it doesn’t have to be that way. More nourishing alternatives include using oats that are rich in B vitamins and fibre as a coating. Pulse in a food processor to give a breadcrumb texture. Or use ground almonds, packed with fibre, protein and antioxidants. Alternatively, make your own breadcrumbs with wholemeal bread and add mixed seeds for extra vitamins, crunch and flavour. Then bake or air fry for a healthier version of your favourite fried-food flavour hit.
