Wearing hearing aids could protect your brain so it’s worth getting regular checks

A major new study has strengthened the link between hearing loss in midlife and the risk of dementia. Researchers tracked more than 2,000 people for up to 15 years and found that even mild hearing loss was linked to a 71 per cent higher chance of developing dementia. People with worse hearing also showed earlier declines in thinking skills and more signs of brain aging on scans.
These findings, from the long-running Framingham Heart Study, support what many experts now think: hearing loss as we age is not just an annoyance but a real risk factor for brain decline. Many people do not realise they have mild hearing loss until a proper test finds it.
But there is good news. The study also found that people with hearing loss who used hearing aids had a lower risk of dementia. Scheduling regular hearing checks and wearing hearing aids if you need them could be a simple way to help protect your brain.
