HEALTHY FOOD SWAPS: XYLITOL FOR SUGAR

Looking to cut sugar without losing sweetness? Xylitol has benefits for your teeth as well as your waistline

Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener found in fruits, vegetables, and is even produced by the body. Commercially, it’s sourced chiefly from corn cobs. As sweet as sugar and without the bitterness of some artificial sweeteners, Xylitol has a negligible effect on blood sugar, which means it can be helpful for people with diabetes. And unlike sugar, it’s actively good for your teeth. Xylitol helps raise your mouth’s pH, which inhibits bacteria and helps prevent cavities. It also reduces plaque and boosts saliva, which plays a role in keeping teeth healthy. Xylitol is perfect to stir in tea and coffee, and can be used in baking, though it doesn’t caramelise, so your bakes will be paler than usual. In excess, Xylitol may have a mild laxative effect and it’s important to know that it is highly toxic to dogs. Find it in the supermarket alongside sugar.
