COULD MELATONIN HELP EASE ACHING JOINTS?
Melatonin is best known as the hormone that helps regulate sleep, but new research suggests it could also offer modest relief for chronic muscle and joint pain

Researchers reviewed 23 clinical trials involving more than 2,000 people and found that melatonin improved both pain and sleep in people with long-term musculoskeletal conditions. Scientists believe it may work by reducing inflammation, calming overactive pain nerves and dampening pain signals in the brain and spinal cord.
The researchers stress that the benefits were modest and melatonin should be viewed as an add-on treatment, rather than a replacement for painkillers or physiotherapy. More high-quality studies are also needed to confirm who is most likely to benefit. If you’re considering taking melatonin for chronic pain, speak to your GP or pharmacist first.
