FEBRUARY CLIPPINGS
There's plenty to keep you busy in the garden in February
SOW UNDER GLASS HARDY PEAS, BROAD BEANS AND LETTUCE, PARSLEY, SWISS CHARD, SPINACH AND SUMMER CABBAGE.
They should not need extra heat, but cover to keep mice off.
BUY SEED POTATOES,
Opting for early and second early varieties if blight is a problem. Place in egg boxes to chit or develop shoots in a cool, bright place prior to planting.
PROVIDE NECTAR FOR QUEEN BUMBLEBEES AND EARLY BUTTERFLIES
emerging from hibernation on bright days. Pulmonarias (lungworts), hellebores, snowdrops and rosemary are ideal.
CUT BACK THE OLD STEMS OF HERBACEOUS PERENNIALS AND DELICIOUS GRASSES
to make way for new growth. Pile them in a heap, as there may be insects hiding in hollow stems.
PRUNE HARD THOSE CLEMATIS THAT WILL BLOOM IN LATE SUMMER,
cutting just above healthy growth buds 30 – 60 cm from the base.
FAQ
How do I get rid of moss in my lawn?
In spring, try pruning overhanging stems and aerate the turf with a fork, before brushing in fine, gritty soil. Apply lime if acidic and raise the height of cut on your mower. Or maybe learn to love moss.
How do I grow straight carrots?
The best carrots grow in light, well-drained soil. If yours is stony or clay with flints, this causes stunted roots. Try a raised bed with better soil, or containers of good potting compost. Sow a few under glass or wait for soil to dry out and warm up in spring.
