GET LIFTING IF YOU WANT TO LIVE LONGER
Regular weight training can seriously reduce your risk of dying from two of the most common killers

A new US study following more than 150,000 people over 30 years found people who did around 90 to 120 minutes of strength training a week, or roughly an hour and a half to two hours, but no more, had about a 13% lower risk of dying from any cause than those who did none. The benefit was strongest for two of the UK’s biggest killers. It gave a 19% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease (which includes heart disease and stroke) and a 27% lower risk of dying from neurological conditions, mainly dementia.
The lowest risk of all was seen in people who paired strength training with aerobic exercise –such as walking, jogging, cycling and swimming. Doing at least 150 minutes a week of aerobic activity was, on its own, linked to a 26%-43% lower risk of death.
