COULD IRON DEFICIENCY BE THE REASON YOUR NEW HEALTH RESET ISN’T WORKING?

Written by Cara Shaw, Nutritionist at BlueIron

January (and February) often arrive with the same promise: this is the year I finally feel better. You’re eating well, cutting back on ultra-processed foods, prioritising protein, moving your body regularly and maybe even sleeping a little more. On paper, you’re doing everything right.

And yet…the results aren’t landing.

You’re still waking up tired.
Your workouts feel harder than they should.
Recovery is slow.
Motivation is flat.
Brain fog lingers.

If this sounds familiar, it’s easy to assume the problem is a lack of discipline. But for many people, the real issue might not be effort at all and might just be poor nutrient status, with iron often the missing piece.

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies worldwide, yet it’s frequently overlooked. You can be eating well, exercising regularly and ticking all the lifestyle boxes, but if your iron levels are suboptimal, your body simply doesn’t have the resources it needs to respond.

This is because iron is fundamental to how we produce energy, adapt to exercise and feel mentally sharp. Without enough iron, your body is constantly working uphill.

Iron plays a central role in:

  • Oxygen transport
  • Cellular energy production
  • Thyroid hormone function and metabolic rate
  • Exercise performance and recovery
  • Cognitive function, focus and motivation

When iron levels are low, oxygen delivery to tissues is compromised. Muscles fatigue more quickly. Exercise feels disproportionately hard. Recovery slows. As it’s a key co-factor for neurotransmitters, low iron can also show up as brain fog, low mood, poor concentration and a general sense of flatness.

This is why iron deficiency may not just feel like physical tiredness it can often look like mental exhaustion, low motivation or ‘I’ve lost my spark’.

One of the biggest challenges with iron deficiency is that it often flies under the radar.

Many people are told their blood tests are ‘normal’ because haemoglobin is within range but iron deficiency can exist long before anaemia develops. Ferritin (iron stores) may be low or borderline, yet symptoms are already affecting daily life.

Iron deficiency is also frequently misattributed to:

  • Stress
  • Poor sleep
  • Overtraining
  • Hormonal changes

As a result, people push harder with more workouts, stricter nutrition and more caffeine, which can actually worsen the problem.

Who is most at risk?

Iron deficiency can affect anyone, but certain groups are particularly vulnerable:

  • Women of reproductive age, especially with heavy or prolonged periods
  • Endurance exercisers and high-intensity trainers
  • Plant-based diets
  • Pregnant and post-partum women
  • Teens going through puberty and rapid periods of growth
  • People with gut issues affecting absorption

What to do if you expect low iron

The first step is awareness. If fatigue, poor recovery and low motivation persist despite good habits, it’s worth investigating iron properly with a full iron panel.

Dietary sources of iron matter, but food alone isn’t always enough to replenish low stores, especially if losses are ongoing. This is where supplementation can be helpful.

Traditional iron supplements are notorious for causing digestive side effects and poor compliance. BlueIron offers a liquid based iron that’s designed to be gentle, highly absorbable, tasty and easier to tolerate, making it a more realistic option for long-term support.

Importantly, iron supplementation should be targeted and monitored, not taken blindly. More isn’t better, the goal is restoring balance so your body can finally respond to the healthy changes you’re already making.

If your New Year reset isn’t delivering the energy, strength or motivation you expected, it may not be a willpower issue at all. Iron deficiency can quietly undermine even the best intentions.

Sometimes the most powerful health shift isn’t doing more, it’s giving your body what it’s been missing.

And for many people, that starts with iron.
