WHAT CAUSES… MOUTH ULCERS?
Do you regularly suffer from painful mouth ulcers? Here’s some simple advice for dealing with them – and when it’s worth getting them checked out

There are many Mouth ulcers are small, painful sores inside the mouth. You might get one or several at a time, usually caused by minor injuries like biting your cheek, braces or hot or rough food. Other triggers include stress, toothpaste irritation, hormonal changes, or vitamin deficiencies, especially low levels of iron, zinc, folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Certain medications and stopping smoking can also be factors. Some people are simply genetically more predisposed to them.
Mouth ulcers are not contagious and usually heal within one to two weeks, but if they’re painful, a pharmacist can recommend gels, lozenges or mouthwashes to help. See a GP if an ulcer lasts more than three weeks, bleeds, becomes very painful, or you feel generally unwell as it could be infected or, very rarely, an early sign of mouth cancer.
