REDISCOVERING YOUR IDENTITY AFTER MATERNITY LEAVE

Between juggling your career and caring for a newborn, it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed when returning to work. Coming back myself after having been home with my twin babies for months was a real adjustment, particularly in retaining my identity beyond motherhood, and keeping my work and home life in balance. But with a few strategies, this transition can be both empowering and sustainable.
Pre-return preparation
Preparation is key to finding FLOW@WORK, so take the time to prepare for your return. Align with your manager and communicate the needs of you and your family. Learn about the company’s policy and discuss any flexible arrangements.
Boundaries
The first few weeks back at work are key as you set the foundation for your future. It’s important to set rules and boundaries early on. For example, I chose to not pick up the phone within certain hours in the evening and that time was non-negotiable.
However, it’s a two-way street, and you need to show your company that you are still committed. Therefore, assess what’s working through regular check-ins, not only for yourself but with your team and your line manager.
Support network
Connect ahead of time with co-workers who have been through the same experience, your friends and your family. There are also lots of resources online which can help you understand what has worked for others and whether this could also help you.
Self-compassion
Self-compassion is essential. It may not work immediately and will require adjustment to find your flow. It’s all about learning and assessing what works, and this may change as your child enters a new phase of life.
When you are a mum, you feel guilty for being at work and not being with your children, and you feel guilty for being at home when it’s busy at work. Give yourself time and show kindness to yourself.
Stay Present
Whether you’re in a meeting at work or reading a bedtime story to your child, focus fully on the moment. Separating work and home life helps reduce stress and boosts your ability to be truly present in each role.
