THE SECRET TO LONG-TERM HAPPINESS

By Katia Vlachos, author of ‘Uncaged: A Good Girl’s Journey to Reinvention’

What if happiness isn’t something we chase or find, but something we create through the meaning we give our lives?

This insight crystallized for me during a recent trip to Japan, where I had the chance to meet artists, craftspeople, and other professionals who radiated joy and deep pride in their work – and not just because they loved what they did and executed it to perfection (which they did). It felt like something deeper.

They saw their work in the context of a much bigger picture, woven into the fabric of their values, community, culture, and ancestral history. A tea master shared how the way she prepares and offers tea reflects how she chooses to live: mindfully, with absolute presence and a spirit of service, grounded in unconditional self-love. An archery master spoke of carrying thirteen generations of tradition in his practice and teaching of kyudo, the ancient samurai art of archery, not as a burden, but as a sacred responsibility. Their purpose wasn’t separate from their identity, but it was a living thread running through every aspect of their lives.

All this made me think that the secret to long-term happiness lies not in the pursuit of personal satisfaction, but in aligning what we do with what we stand for, and seeing it as part of something greater than ourselves. When we root our work in meaning and understand its place in our life story, its impact on others, and its connection to tradition, we create a foundation for a more enduring kind of joy. One that’s less reliant on fleeting moments and external success, and more on a feeling of groundedness and deep fulfillment.

So as I see it, long-term happiness is not a pursuit, but the natural outcome of leading a purposeful life.
