HOW PARENTS CAN HELP THEIR KIDS WITH DIGITAL OVERWHELM

In today’s hyper-connected world, children are growing up surrounded by screens, notifications, and endless digital distractions. While technology can be a great tool for learning and creativity, too much of it can lead to overwhelm, stress, and difficulty focusing. As a parent, you can help your child develop a healthy relationship with technology by setting boundaries, encouraging balance, and leading by example.

1. Create tech-free zones

Designate areas in your home where screens are off-limits—like the dinner table or bedrooms. This helps children disconnect, improve sleep quality, and strengthen real-life interactions. Make sure to explain this is not a punishment but because in your house you want to have a balance from fake-news and boost your focus and mental health.

2. Set screen time limits

Rather than banning devices outright, establish daily screen time limits based on age and needs. Tools like built-in screen time trackers can help children become aware of their digital habits and self-regulate – but at the beginning it’s important that  parents are on top of these limits as technology is especially addictive when our children’s brains are developing.

3. Encourage quality over quantity

Not all screen time is equal. Encourage activities that involve creativity, learning, or connection—such as coding, digital art, or video calls with family—while reducing mindless scrolling or excessive gaming.

4. Lead by example

Children model their behaviour on what they see. If you’re constantly checking your phone, they’ll follow suit. Set your own boundaries—like putting your phone away during family time—to show that digital balance is important.

5. Prioritise offline activities

Encourage hobbies that don’t involve screens, like sports, music, reading, or outdoor adventures. Creating a balance between online and offline activities helps kids build resilience and focus.

By taking a proactive approach to digital wellbeing, you can empower your children to develop healthy tech habits that will benefit them throughout their lives. Be sure to evolve your approach as they grow older, collaborating on how to manage the negative aspects of technology. Additionally, learn from your digital natives to ensure that tech becomes a shared challenge and opportunity, rather than a point of contention between you.
