THE POWER IN CELEBRATING SMALL WINS

While we rarely equate small things with big things, celebrating the small wins in our lives can have a profound impact in a world where we often fixate on big achievements and goals. While seemingly minor in the scheme of things, it is these little victories that are the building blocks to our growth.
Celebrating small wins is good for us. We live in a world that obsesses over outcomes, but when we stop and celebrate the little achievements, we get a meaningful reward, both in terms of dopamine being released and that sense of progress which keeps us motivated and resilient. Given humans have a negativity bias, this positive reinforcement is a reminder to keep going, especially when it’s challenging.
Another thing to consider is how much we can now consume about other people’s lives, and the big milestones we see advertised on a daily basis. Celebrating the small wins of yourself and others helps to maintain perspective and not take for granted the many small stepping stones that lead to success. Just seeing these small moments can boost our level of contentment and how we feel about ourselves.
One thing that isn’t often mentioned is how a small win mindset can make us more appreciative, and not just of the successes, but also of the things that don’t go to plan. We become more likely to explore setbacks and mistakes we make and see them as small diversions that give an opportunity to learn, rather than failures we dwell on, and this way of operating is vital in today’s uncertain times.
The social aspect of celebration is another bonus, given we live in individualistic times. Our small wins can be a ripple for those around us, creating opportunities to connect and bond with others, while giving space and permission for them to explore their small wins too.
Something to try is to look at the gains we have made, which are full of small wins, and take a moment for them, rather than always focusing on the gap to where we want to be. This can boost our confidence and provide that perspective on progress which is sustainable. And with one small celebration, we can embrace the beauty of life for what it is, finding balance in the process.
