WINTER WALKS

The most enchanting historic gardens to visit during winter

Get your steps in this January by taking a stroll through one of charity English Heritage’s 23 gardens, all with spectacular winter views. The architectural splendour of espaliered fruit trees abounds at Audley End House in Essex, while at Belsay Hall in Northumberland, exotic elements can be spied under the frost, including a large Chusan palm.

A visit to Brodsworth Hall in South Yorkshire is a must for snowdrop seekers where over 500,000 snowdrops and 200,000 aconites will cast their white and yellow blanket over the grounds.

“Winter is a great time of year to appreciate the structure of Osborne House’s avenues and its Victorian evergreen trees,” explains Toby Beasley, Head Gardener at Queen Victoria’s home on the Isle of Wight. “Prince Albert designed the grounds meticulously, and he checked the trees’ placement by having flags planted in their place as he watched from the flag tower above.” Visit engish-heritage.org.uk
