ROISIN QUINN’S ‘FULL-FAT MAXIMALISM’ APPROACH TO CHRISTMAS
Roisin Quinn, winner of BBC Interior Design Masters S5, gives her advice on decorating for Christmas

Christmas holds a special place in my heart, filling my home with warmth, charm, and a sense of tradition. I absolutely adore how vibrant decorations and a sprinkle of tinsel can transform any space, instantly making it feel like home. There’s something magical about traditional Christmas decor that speaks to me, it’s both nostalgic and enduring, connecting the past with the present. I especially love collecting vintage ornaments and finding unique baubles full of character and history, each one with its own story to tell. I love bold colours at Christmas, especially the rich reds and vibrant greens that fill every corner with festive cheer! I’m all about elaborate tablescapes and decorations spread throughout the house, adding a joyful, spirited feel to every room.
You can never have too much tinsel or lighting in my opinion. I love wrapping garland around the staircase and adding lights that create a cosy glow in every corner of the house. There’s something heart-warming about the timelessness of traditional decorations, each piece adding to the festive atmosphere. For me, Christmas is all about family, creating memories, and embracing the spirit of togetherness. When I decorate, I see familiar ornaments that have been with us for years, and they bring back fond memories of past Christmases. These aren’t just decorations; they’re cherished pieces of family history, reminders of celebrations we’ve shared and traditions we’ve created.

While I appreciate the joy of discovering new decorations, I’m mindful about choosing ones that will become part of our holiday tradition, lasting for years instead of just one season. The trend of disposable decor doesn’t appeal to me, it often feels wasteful and lacks the emotional connection that comes from timeless pieces. I prefer to build a collection that grows gradually, adding pieces that resonate with us and will be lovingly unpacked each December. This way, our holiday decor becomes an ever-evolving reflection of our family’s journey, rich with memories, tradition, and the joy of the season.
