THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF BAKING
GBBO winner Matty Edgell discusses the impact baking as had on his mental health

Looking after your health is extremely important, which may sound ironic for someone who spends their life baking things that are usually deemed ‘unhealthy’. However, health and fitness are just as important to me as baking. For me, it’s all about balance, and part of getting that right is making better choices around food. Giving yourself access to the foods you love is important!
Baking your own treats can be a simple way to strike this balance. If you buy a cake from the supermarket, it may have been sitting there for days. If you read the ingredients on the back, you are introduced to a list that you will never see in a cookbook! Baking at home eliminates preservatives and processed foods, making it immediately healthier.
Baking allows you to take full control over the ingredients you include and the quantity of them being used. Not only can you create a bake perfect for your pallet, but also your dietary needs – perhaps that means you use more nutrient dense foods like nuts and seeds, or opting for less sugar in the bake.
Another benefit of baking is the mental health impact and the escapism that baking can provide. For me, I receive a huge sense of reward and pride when I’ve baked something. It’s always great to see the fruits of your labour, and then finally the satisfaction of eating it!
