THE BENEFITS OF REGULAR FAMILY MOVIE NIGHTS
Regular family movie nights strengthen bonds and enrich children's emotional and intellectual growth, says expert Professor Michael Atar

There’s a good reason why we talk about “the magic of cinema,” because among all art forms, there’s perhaps nothing else quite as accessible and enjoyable to all. But while watching movies at home was once very much a family activity, the rise of smartphones, tablets, and streaming services has radically transformed how we consume content.
Spoilt for choice, we may now watch more movies but outside of a cinema, but we rarely do so together. Here are some reasons why regular family movie nights are important.
1. STRENGTHENING FAMILY BONDS
Humans are inherently social creatures and we all know that watching a film with company somehow ‘feels’ better. A study by the University of Oxford found that collective activities like watching a movie can boost the release of endorphins that lead to increased feelings of social bonding and connectedness.
You may be able to set aside a few hours every few weeks to dedicate sacrosanct time to be with your children, creating a tradition you all look forward to—and one that fosters an important sense of unity and belonging.
2. MAKING YOUR CHILDREN FEEL VALUED AND HEARD
Discussing a film afterward open up important lines of communication, helping your children feel heard and valued. That’s why it’s important to involve your children in selecting films to watch together. Their choices are, in a sense, inviting you into their world.
Children are drawn to films for specific reasons. It could simply be because everyone at school is talking about it but, equally, it could be because a particular film deals with a topic they’re struggling with.
This may especially be the case with older children and teenagers. They may want to watch a film dealing with bullying, peer pressure, self-identity or sexuality in the hope it provides insights into navigating their own challenges.
They may find it difficult to discuss their feelings or concerns with you, but a movie night provides a safe space to process these complex issues. Just being there is comforting and reassuring.
3. DEVELOPING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Films portray human emotions and experiences and can help children develop their emotional intelligence, nurturing empathy and social skills while also enabling them to understand and articulate their own emotions better.
Moreover, they can offer an impressive window on other cultures, ideas and perspectives, especially if you include foreign, black and white, and silent films. While they may be slightly harder to get into at first, they can prove deeply enriching and lead to meaningful discussions that help broaden a child’s understanding of the world.
PLANNING YOUR MOVIE NIGHT
With so much choice, planning is vital. Otherwise, you might spend your evening just scrolling through Netflix! To keep things fair and fun, take turns to choose an evening’s film, drawing from a pre-prepared list compiled together.
After the movie, you can discuss your impressions, but keep this easy and natural rather than trying to prompt responses. Certain films can, depending on themes being explored, be triggering so try to avoid placing your children on the spot by asking questions.
Start off by sharing your perspective to act as a gateway for your children to follow if they wish. Sometimes they may not want to but it may well pop up in a chat over following weeks.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Family movie nights can be a powerful tool for fostering emotional intelligence, strengthening family bonds, and creating a supportive environment for open communication.
Moreover, they will create lasting memories that serve as a foundation for a strong family relationship that your children will cherish into adulthood.
