NOVEMBER CLIPPINGS
As the year draws to a close, enjoy the rich hues of russets
and bronze in the low autumn sun, says Anne Swithinbank

MOVE YOUNG TREES OR SHRUBS
(including roses) growing in the wrong place between now and spring, conditions allowing. Dig around and then under plants, trim damaged roots and replant at the same depth.

PLANT TULIPS IN LATE AUTUMN
setting them so they are covered by at least twice their depth with soil. In containers, they can sit closely together though not touching with, if you like, a layer of daffodils above. In borders, space informally 10-15cm apart.

PLANT WINTER-FLOWERING SHRUBBY
viburnums, honeysuckles, mahonias and herbaceous ground covering lungworts (pulmonarias). Both bumble and honeybees will venture out to forage on mild wintry days and these will supply nectar.

LIFT DAHLIA TUBERS IN COLDER AREAS,
or where they might suffer from winter wet. Their tubers continue to swell until the plants have completely died back, so let the first couple of light frosts blacken the foliage before lifting. Trim stalks, dry tubers briefly and cover them with old, dry potting compost before setting in a cool, frost-free place.

PLACE POTTED CITRUS TREES
in good but not harsh light in a cool, frost free place. Check them for scale insects and wipe away. Switch to a winter citrus feed or other well-balanced liquid fertiliser applied monthly until spring.

SOW SWEET PEA SEEDS SINGLY
to long modules or four to a 9cm pot. Place in an unheated greenhouse or cold frame and cover to keep mice off.Should plants become straggly, pinch out growing tips.
